Today, we’re honored to share the inspiring journey of Doc, a white standard poodle who went from being neglected in a puppy mill to thriving as a beloved member of our family.
Life in a Puppy Mill
Doc’s early years were far from the life any dog deserves. As a stud in a puppy mill producing golden doodles, he lived in neglectful conditions with little care for his health or well-being. When law enforcement shut down the puppy mill, most of the female dogs were rescued by a golden retriever rescue organization (Adopt A Golden Atlanta). But Doc and his brother needed rescuing as well, their futures uncertain.
Thankfully, Adopt A Golden Atlanta contacted Florida Poodle Rescue, who stepped in and took the brothers under their wing. While Doc was finally free from the puppy mill, his journey to a loving home was just beginning.
A Rocky Start in Foster Care
Doc’s first foster placement seemed promising, but it soon became clear that he needed a more secure environment. He climbed the chain-link fence of his foster home and escaped, showing his determination to seek safety and stability.
Having recently adopted Chewbacca (Chewie) from Florida Poodle Rescue, the organization knew from our home inspection that we had a secure 6-foot PVC privacy fence. They reached out to ask if we could foster Doc. Without hesitation, we agreed—and little did we know, this decision would change all of our lives for the better.
Health Challenges and a Long Road to Recovery
When Doc arrived at our home, it was clear that years of neglect had taken a toll on his health. His most pressing issue was a severe double ear infection. While our regular vet managed to clear the infection in his left ear, his right ear proved to be a much bigger challenge.
The infection in Doc’s right ear was chronic, requiring repeated trips to a veterinary dermatology specialist several hours from our home. After a month of trying various treatments, the specialist determined that Doc would need TECA (Total Ear Canal Ablation) surgery.
The procedure was life-changing for Doc. Though he permanently lost hearing in his right ear, he was finally free from the pain and discomfort that had plagued him for so long. Watching him heal and regain his happiness was worth every mile traveled and every effort made.
Finding Love and Stability
Despite his past hardships, Doc has never tried to escape our home. It’s as if he knows he’s finally where he belongs. Showered with love and affection, Doc has become an integral part of our family, and we’ve never regretted a single decision that led to adopting him.
Because of his older age and the sedentary life he lived in the puppy mill, Doc is a low-energy and laid-back dog. His gentle demeanor makes him a favorite among new people he meets, and his loyalty to our family—especially to his mama—is unwavering.
